Fragment Of A Maffrash From Karabakh. Caucasus. Circa 1820. 51 X 39 Cm

Probably one of the oldest pieces in our collection, this fragment of a Maffrash from Karabakh, Armenia, has been dated to the first quarter of the 19th century based on my research in the specialized literature. The colors and the extreme precision of the weaving support this dating and take us back to the very beginning of the 19th century. The motifs seem almost carved into the fabric, so precise is their execution and so perfectly defined are their contours. It is a small work of art.

The main field unfolds against a muted madder-pink background, which in places takes on a shade of dusty rose. It is punctuated by large diamond-shaped medallions. Their sawtooth edges, interlocking shapes, and the small motifs that punctuate them attest to a remarkable finesse of execution. On either side, decorative bands alternate between angular motifs, meandering patterns, and stylized forms. The color palette combines these shades of pink with indigo blues, blue-green tones, and touches of ivory. These contrasts lend great depth to the composition without detracting from its overall harmony.

This small surface showcases the full artistry of Armenian weavers. The composition, dense yet perfectly legible, gives this fragment a presence that far exceeds its size.
