Maffrash Shahsaven. Persia. Circa 1880. 110 X 110 Cm. Woven Rug
Fragment of a Shahsavan mafrash. Persia. Circa 1880

A texture that reveals itself to the touch
Many of our loyal customers are visually impaired. Their presence has taught me to look at textiles differently: touch, too, can open a path to their beauty and help us discover their forms.
That is exactly how I feel about this fragment. Even before unfolding it, the moment you hold it in your hands, its lightness is striking. Then come its suppleness and the almost unbelievable fineness of its weave. To me, this first sensation already says a great deal about the piece: it is refined, precise, and bears all the hallmarks of a beautiful late 19th-century weave.
A Structured and Balanced Composition
The perfectly mastered balance of the composition is also sensational. Three large medallions with hooks stand out against the red field, punctuated by small rosettes, octagons, and finely ornamented bands. The striped ends correspond to part of the bag’s lining.
These star-shaped forms and hooks belong to a geometric vocabulary shared by both Shahsavan and Caucasian weaves. One might see in them a protective symbolism, though this is not a definitive interpretation: their power also lies in the movement and precision of their arrangement.
A vibrant and nuanced color palette
The deep red of the field gives the whole piece its unity. It highlights the very dark blues, the light blues, the ivory, and the shades of green, while a few touches of yellow and brown warm up the composition. In my view, it is the interplay between the red and the cooler motifs—pale blue and soft green—that makes this color palette so unique: it is vibrant, yet never garish.
