Two Khorjin Panels Joined Together. Persia. Early 20th Century. 160 X 71 Cm

This piece is particularly interesting for its construction and the interplay between two very different textile techniques.

Each side features a large central panel made using the sumak technique, extended at one end by a section woven in the knotted stitch. This alternation creates a beautiful contrast in textures: the relief and density of the velvet are counterbalanced by the much more graphic delicacy of the sumak.

The central panels are arranged with remarkable regularity. Against red, green, and ivory backgrounds, horizontal bands follow one another, each featuring a particularly charming motif: highly stylized birds, reduced to a few geometric lines. Repeated alternately in one direction and then the other, they lend a real sense of movement to the composition.

Small borders of diamonds, crosses, and polychrome motifs structure the whole with great precision.

At both ends, the change is spectacular. The knotted stitch allows the colors to shine even more: intense blues, reds, greens, yellows, ivory, and black form large diamond-shaped medallions. These deep, luminous hues contrast with the softer, weathered palette of the sumak sections.

With its striking decorative quality, this piece preserves the memory of an everyday object: the khorjin was first and foremost a double-sided bag used for transport and storage, an integral part of nomadic life.
