A very beautiful pair of Caucasian mafrash fragments from Azerbaijan.

Sumak technique, wool on wool.

The design is particularly unique. It does not appear in any of the reference works in my possession and stands out as much for the power of its motifs as for the richness of its color palette.
The composition is based on large, highly stylized central motifs, surrounded by small geometric elements, with the whole framed by highly graphic borders. The design possesses that distinctive strength found in ancient Caucasian textiles: great freedom of interpretation combined with a perfect mastery of rhythm and symmetry.

The plant-based dyes, which are particularly dense and saturated, are remarkable: madder red, deep indigo blue, dark green, natural ivory, brown, yellow, and a few striking touches of pink. Their intensity and depth give these two fragments an exceptional presence.

Their condition is also noteworthy for pieces that are approximately 150 years old. Both panels have retained a beautifully clear design and a general sense of freshness.
The workmanship is delicate, refined, and executed with consummate skill.
These fragments can, of course, be framed, but their textile nature and beautiful texture also allow for unframed wall display or presentation on a piece of furniture or a table.
