Anatolian Kilim. Mid-20th Century. 305 X 125 Cm

A remarkable Anatolian kilim from the Antalya region, whose composition exudes a particularly powerful graphic presence.

The design is organized around a vertical sequence of large diamond-shaped medallions, interlocking with one another and connected by a network of broken lines.
The composition is based on an apparent symmetry, constantly enlivened by subtle variations in design, proportions, and colors. It is precisely this asymmetry within the symmetry that gives the piece its full power: the motifs echo one another without ever repeating mechanically, the axes shift slightly, the contours expand or contract, and certain shapes seem to emerge freely from the weave.
This freedom of composition is characteristic of the great creativity of Anatolian weaving. Here, the weaver does not follow a fixed model or pattern; she gradually builds her design, introducing deviations, breaks, and inventions that give the kilim its deeply vibrant character. Each medallion thus becomes a small, self-contained composition, comparable to an abstract pictorial form, where blocks of color, angular lines, and contrasting tones produce an almost musical rhythm.
The particularly expressive color palette combines madder red, brick red, orange, saffron yellow, golden ochre, indigo blue, turquoise blue, very dark brown, and ecru white. These bold colors, juxtaposed without transition, reinforce the drawing’s almost modern power.
Through its chromatic audacity, the freedom of its lines, and its constant interplay between order and irregularity, this kilim transcends the simple framework of traditional textile art. It appears as a true woven pictorial work—spontaneous yet masterful—in which geometry becomes a language of astonishing modernity...
