Turkmen Chuval Yomud. Circa 1880. 107 X 58 Cm

This Turkmen chuval captivates with its red field punctuated by horizontal bands and finely drawn geometric motifs. Its composition, both understated and structured, highlights the richness of its colors.

The two main sections consist of repeated motifs resembling stylized rosettes, while the narrower bands echo this rhythm in a more subtle way. This arrangement evokes the vocabulary of Yomut weavings, where the gul—a geometric motif often floral in nature—can also serve as a tribal emblem. The forms respond to one another like a sequence of signs, without it being possible to attribute a single, definitive meaning to each one.

The front features a deep madder red, enlivened by very dark indigo blue tones, almost black in places. Ivory highlights the motifs, while shades of brown and darker red define their contours. On the reverse, the design gives way to a solid shade of warm brown—somewhere between tobacco and terracotta—whose subtle variations reveal the weft.

The fineness of the weave is exceptional: with wool, it would be difficult to achieve anything finer.
