çankırı Kilim. Anatolia. Circa 1880. 256 X 76 Cm
The subtlety of a interplay of materials and techniques
What first catches the eye is the extreme delicacy of the weave. The succession of horizontal bands creates a highly structured composition, in which woven sections alternate with embroidered sections. Added to this precision is a combination of materials: sheep’s wool covers almost the entire piece, while the light brown bands are made of camel wool. The exceptionally soft hues and this blend of wools lend the kilim a subtle elegance.
The Embroidered Stripes: A Design to Explore
The embroidered stripes naturally draw the eye. They add depth and rhythm to the composition, while also inviting the viewer to linger over the details. The workmanship is particularly meticulous. Each has its own nuances: the patterns resemble one another, yet never repeat exactly. In my view, it is this subtle interplay between similarities and variations that makes you want to examine each band more closely.
Texture and Dyeing
The weaving, which is extremely precise and tight, results in a fabric of great finesse. On its surface, the color palette achieves a remarkable balance: the hues of the bands with embroidered patterns interact with the broad solid areas, without ever disrupting the overall harmony. The regularity of the weave highlights the sharpness of the patterns, while the color variations give them depth. It is this interplay between texture and dyeing that gives the kilim its full depth.
