Those who follow us, or those who occasionally come across our posts, know how much care we take in describing each piece.
I’ve just laid this Karabakh rug out in front of me, and it is with great humility—but also deep emotion—that I’m about to describe it. It’s a delicate task because, just looking at it, one could almost forget oneself.
What colors!
I feel like a child standing in front of a candy store window. Everything here is marvelous: the perfect harmony of the hues, the balance of this composition with its exceptional graphic power, and these interlocking motifs that arrange themselves with absolute naturalness across the entire surface.
I notice the deliberate absence of a central field. Why would one have been necessary? The entire composition flows as a single, uninterrupted breath, like a true painting.
I used the word “graphic.” It likely didn’t exist in its current sense at the end of the 19th century… yet it comes to mind naturally, given how surprisingly contemporary this creation seems.
When I showed this rug to a friend—a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts and a great lover of beautiful things—he made this remark:
“ I’m not sure that even 10% of my students would be capable of creating such a perfectly balanced harmony of shapes and colors.”
That says it all.
We are in the presence of excellence.
Traditionally woven and knotted using the wool-on-wool technique, this Caucasian rug features a short pile, characteristic of the finest antique pieces. Its color palette relies exclusively on vegetable dyes, whose vibrancy—nearly a century and a half later—remains simply remarkable.
Its state of preservation is nothing short of a miracle, with only a few very subtle historical restorations worth noting.
