Pair Of Anatolian Shoulder Bags. Natural Wool. Mid-20th Century. 150 X 75 Cm
As I look at this piece, I find myself thinking that, after that, it was already the beginning of the end.
This is a mid-20th-century woven piece, from a time when people still valued the quality of the wool, the craftsmanship, and harmony—even in simplicity.
This simplicity, which ultimately leads to elegance.
This object—this double-compartment bag—is part of the vast family of everyday items used by populations that were once nomadic before the shift to a sedentary lifestyle...
It has it all: generous dimensions for carrying various goods, sturdy weaving and stitching, and an ingenious closure system that remains intact. And then there’s the hand-spun wool, natural colors, no dyes. Only the colors of nature, the environment, and the raw material—true to form and perfectly suited.
Patterns follow one another. One detail stands out, however: the “viper’s tongue” shape on the widest ecru horizontal bands. In reality, these are wolf’s muzzles—discreet yet present—evoking and symbolizing protection; they reassure us.
Through this piece—and this is very personal—I see the history of nomadic peoples, as if in a black-and-white documentary, like a narrative etched and suspended in time. Not an interpretation, but the authentic, original work.
People knew how to make things, and they passed down this knowledge during long, cool evenings.
In perfect condition, this highly decorative piece is ideal for hanging on the wall, draping over a railing, or as a pair of cushions simply placed on the floor.
