Yalameh Rug—qashqai/lor, Persia. Circa 1920. 195 X 105 Cm

A superb Yalameh rug from southwestern Iran.
Woven and knotted with wool over wool. The pile is short, one of the distinctive features of ancient Persian rugs.
This piece is the work of the Qashqai nomadic people.
The composition is highly unconventional and, ultimately, not very traditional. The central field features a series of abrash—subtle variations in shade within a single color.
In the center is a classic diamond-shaped medallion. More unexpected are the side motifs in the form of stylized birds, separated by octagonal floral motifs, which bring balance to the overall design.
The borders consist of small floral motifs that seem to protect the central field.
Magnificent plant-based dyes of infinite softness. The indigo blues appear almost liquid.
The borders were completely reworked by Saïd, our restorer. A stop stitch at each end along the fringes. No other restoration on the intact surface.
