Maffrash Shahsaven. Persia. Circa 1900. 150 X 106 Cm
A unique color palette and a particularly bold design immediately give this fragment of a Shahsavan mafrash its distinctive character.
The eye is first drawn to this striking succession of antique pink and deep brown stripes, before discovering the much more elaborate sumak sections, where indigo blue, pink, coral red, ivory, and a few touches of orange interplay.
Color plays an essential role here. The combination of antique pinks, deep browns, and indigo blue creates a palette that is less commonly found in these Shahsavan pieces. Ivory and a few touches of orange brighten it up in places. The piece as a whole possesses a rather unexpected softness, without ever losing the graphic strength characteristic of antique mafrash.
The finesse of the workmanship deserves special attention. The precision of the patterns, the evenness of the soumak, and the skill with which the different sections flow into one another attest to remarkable craftsmanship. Behind this precision lies, above all, the hand of a nomadic weaver, capable of transforming an everyday object into a true work of textile art.
Mafrash were veritable textile chests used by nomadic peoples, particularly the Shahsavan of northwestern Persia. They were used to transport and then store blankets, bedding, and personal belongings during their travels. Composed of several panels, they often combined different weaving techniques, including sumak, which is particularly well-suited for creating precise and durable patterns.

Our collection includes nearly a hundred antique mafrash, preserved either in their complete form or as fragments and panels. This diversity allows us to appreciate the extraordinary visual richness of these everyday objects, with each piece retaining something of the identity and creative freedom of the weaver who created it.
Choosing an antique rug or textile is often a serendipitous encounter.
If one of our pieces catches your eye, or if you’d like more information or photos, I’d be happy to speak with you.
