"If we wanted to do better, in the end, we’d just make the same one all over again!"

Everything seems particularly just right in this antique Chuval: the colors, the fabric, the finesse of the workmanship, and the balance of the composition.
Above all, the color palette possesses that softness found in the most beautiful antique textiles. Deep indigo blue, brick red, dusty pink, ivory, soft green, and a few bolder accents come together with remarkable harmony. The use of plant-based dyes contributes fully to this richness of shades and their natural evolution over time.
This softness of color is echoed in the softness of the fabric. Woven with a wool-on-wool technique, the piece uses very high-quality wool that is particularly soft and supple. This suppleness is also the result of masterful craftsmanship: the weave is fine, extremely even, and precise, with a refinement evident even in the smallest details.
The composition alternates between wide woven bands and several registers of patterns executed using the sumak technique. The large geometric motifs, built around diamonds, hooks, and interlocking shapes, unfold with great rhythm. The narrower registers, by contrast, feature a succession of small polychrome medallions, adding an extra touch of finesse to the whole. At both ends, small stylized motifs further enrich the composition.

Originating from the Bergama region in western Anatolia, Turkey, this “chouval” can be dated to around 1900, or perhaps slightly earlier. Originally a utilitarian object, intended for transport and storage in rural and nomadic Anatolia, it possesses a quality of craftsmanship that far exceeds its mere function.
The piece has come down to us in remarkable condition, flawless, retaining all the suppleness of its wool, the depth of its colors, and the precision of its design. An antique textile where the simplicity of an everyday object meets true refinement.

It’s enough to make you swoon with delight!
