Malatya Kilim / Anatolia. Circa 1880. Museum-quality Piece. 400 X 86 Cm

A true museum piece, this kilim fragment belongs to the category of works more commonly found in institutional collections, reference books, or major private collections than on the market.

This is a section of an antique kilim, whose monumental scale and quality of workmanship attest to its exceptional craftsmanship. Originating from Malatya, in southeastern Anatolia, it is the work of Kurdish weavers, whose craftsmanship is recognized as among the most refined in the Anatolian textile tradition.

The design, with its remarkable graphic power, is organized around a succession of large geometric medallions linked by a rhythmic central axis, while a spectacular white side border, composed of stylized ram’s horns, structures the whole with striking visual impact. The balance between the blocks of color, the angular forms, and the interplay of symmetry lends this work a surprising modernity.

Masterfully hand-woven wool-on-wool.
The weaving is a work of art. Extremely fine, supple, and delicate.
Its color palette, composed exclusively of vegetable dyes, features deep indigo blues, intense madder reds, warm browns, and brilliant whites whose freshness has endured for nearly a century and a half. Many of the patterns are accented with twisted metallic threads—a particularly rare detail that lends brilliance and preciousness to this extraordinary piece.
Its state of preservation, bordering on a miracle, further underscores its exceptional character. Suitable for a long hallway, a staircase landing, or wall display, this fragment is above all a textile work of the highest caliber, worthy of the finest museum displays.
