Derbent carpet from the Caucasus, in wool on cotton, decorated with polylobed medallions, circa 1950.
This carpet has three medallions very worked in the center of a cream field, taken on the sides of half medallions and closing of four Spandrels with the same motif. The bright colors, dominated by a shimmering purple on a cream background bring out all the patterns wonderfully.
It is not uncommon to find in the fabrications of these countries very bright colors, purple, yellow, red, orange, blue that awaken the decorations of these knotted or woven carpets.
The Derbents originate from the highlands of Daghestan, close to the Caspian Sea and remain iconic rugs of the Russian Caucasus.
The border followed by two stripes is decorated with large flowers with stylized corollas resembling tulips, the stripes are adorned with a curious pattern of claws with three teeth (wool comb?) Finished with a carnation flower, or is it is simply a stylized flowering branch, pattern already seen on a carpet Kouba 1900.
The finish of this carpet is made kilim, the liveliness of the colors affixed on a shiny wool short of high quality, makes it a remarkable carpet and in perfect condition .
