Kilim (chuval) From Balikesir, Anatolia. Circa 1880. 185 X 130 Cm. Rug
This piece is remarkable; it consists of two old chuval—large woven sacks, typically used for transporting or storing grain—that have now been joined and sewn together. Originating from the Balıkesir region in northwestern Turkey, they display a striking similarity in craftsmanship. Their color palettes, the rhythm of their bands, and the way the patterns are arranged suggest that they were made by the same weaver, likely one after the other.
The upper section, which is more understated, corresponds to the back of a chuval, with its horizontal bands and large light-colored blocks. The lower section reveals a much more elaborate composition: a succession of star-shaped medallions, surrounded by angular motifs and friezes of diamonds. A dense geometric design, whose regularity contrasts with the freer rhythm of the bands.
The exquisite fineness of the weave, combined with the plant-based dyes, allows this piece to be dated to around 1880. The motifs are created using the sumak technique, which gives the designs highly precise outlines: the shapes appear almost sculpted into the fabric.
Brought together today, these two antique Chuval rugs form a cohesive set, ideal for display on the floor.
