Afyon Daskiri Kilim - Anatolia. Circa 1950. 285 X 90 Cm

This Afyon kilim has a cheerful presence. Madder red and indigo blue set the tone; warm ivory, saffron yellow, and soft green bring them to life, while the nearly black browns punctuate the whole. I love the way these colors shift from one register to another: they give the design its momentum without disrupting its balance.

The patterns follow this same flow. Large, branching shapes, star-shaped diamonds, and small rosettes follow one another in horizontal bands, echoing each other and transforming as the composition unfolds. The dark borders define their outlines. The overall effect is generous and very lively, yet it retains a beautiful composure.
