Kiz - Bergama Rug, Bridal Carpet, 108 X 163 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool On Wool, Circa 1900 - 1920
Artist: Art Ottoman
Kiz bridal rug from the Bergamo region called Kiz-Bergama.
Woven in Turkey, wool on wool circa 1900-1920.
This beautiful wedding rug stands out for its double niche and use of ivory and dark red.
In the center on a red background, a medallion features large flowers in the vertical axis of its niches.
These rugs are usually jealously kept in families.
They can be recognized by the drawings of large apple blossoms located in the two boards closing the field.
These designs are propitiatory motifs of fertility, as are the small black and red "sinekli" flies found in the four camel-colored spandrels.
The term "Kiz" means "young girl" in Turkish, and tells us that we are in the presence of a privately-used, village-produced carpet.
The main border is embellished with a series of eight-pointed stars flanked by red "Medahils" (stylized arrows) and accompanied by stylized apple blossoms in blue.
These numerous symbols clearly indicate that this rug is a bridal rug.
These rugs are rarely found on the market.
The wool pile of this rug is short and shiny.
The density is approximately 360000 knots per M2.
The colors are frank, the field shows inevitable wear due to its age.
This piece can therefore be considered a rug in very good condition in view of its years.
Bergama, a town in the province of Izmir, in western Turkey, lies 80 km north of the city of Izmir (Smyrna) .
