Avanos Rug, Cappadocia, 127 X 187 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool On Wool, Circa 1900, Ancient Prayer
Artist: Femmes D'avanos
Avanos rug originating from Cappadocia, and more precisely from the "Valley of a Thousand Churches".
It measures 127 cm wide by 187 cm long.
Circa 1900.
Avanos rugs are knotted by women in a traditional style, featuring cheerful and original colors.
The essential difference between these rugs and other Turkish rugs lies in the preservation of the old Gördes style, while adding a significant element of originality.
The design and characteristics of this style of rug remain strictly specific to Avanos: the mihrab (niche), decorated with its hanging ornament, the characteristic red color, the often-present twin columns, and a tight but never stiff knot, which make them fluid and supple rugs.
These elements make it easy to immediately recognize an Avanos rug.
The weft is double wool, the warp is wool followed by a wool pile.
Dimensions: width: 127 cm (50") x length: 187 cm (50") 73")
# The "Valley of a Thousand Churches" in Cappadocia is a region where early Christians took shelter in numerous caves, some 3,000, around the 4th century.
They left behind extraordinary Christian chapels and churches in these caverns, hence the origin of the valley's name.
This rug, of great beauty and delicate design and color, is a true jewel of Cappadocian art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
## Note the slight wear on the hanging surface due to the fervor and devotion of its former owner(s).
This rug can serve as a decorative element on the floor, but given its great beauty, it can also be displayed as a wall decoration. For any information or additional photos and videos, please call me at +33 6 13 36 09 30 or winsteinprovence@gmail.com.
