Turkmen Yomoud Rug, 162 X 213 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool From Central Asia, 1860–1900

Artist: Turkmènes
Yomoud Turkmen Rug, 162 cm x 213 cm,
Hand-knotted wool,
second half of the 19th century,
between 1860 and 1900
Artist: Yomud
Wool rug from the nomadic and semi-nomadic Yomud Turkmen tribe.
Native to Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan, regions inhabited by these peoples.

This carpet from the second half of the 19th century is in good condition, showing some wear due to its age.
The natural colors are typical of the Yomouds: orange, black, white, purple, and raspberry.

Our rug features a characteristic of these antique rugs:
the kilim band folded inward, known as the “alam.”
It serves to protect the beginning of the rug, while the other end is finished with fringes.
The geometric design consists of a half-diamond pattern covered with numerous stylized flowers.
Two large panels, regularly dotted with triangles and tribal geometric shapes, fill the space.
The border consists of a design of stylized ram’s horns (“kotchaks”) and sticks.
The overall design, along with the natural colors used, exudes a modernity and spontaneity characteristic of this type of rug and of all rugs from the various Turkmen tribes.
