Hanbel Du Haouz, 174 X 297 Cm, Chichoua Or Boujad Tribe, Wool, Morocco Circa 1900 - 1930

Artist: Chichaoua Ou Boujad
This large Hanbel from the Boujad tribe or the Chichaoua tribe, originates from the Haouz in Morocco.
The Haouz Plain is an alluvial plain located in south-central Morocco, between the High Atlas to the south and the small Jbilet massif to the north.

Hanbels are woven only by the women of these ethnic groups, considered the most skilled in the art of weaving in Morocco.
Our large model measures 174 cm wide by 297 cm long.
The bangs give it a total length of 307 cm.

The carpet is covered with tribal motifs specific to these tribes, there is always a considerable importance of techniques and the sacred for these women in the manufacture of these pieces, superstitions are present as in the Caucasus or Central Asia ... in these ethnic carpets.

Hanbels are very strong and light carpets, compared with high-wool, knotted-stitch carpets.
They are used as decoration or covering, and alternate between several geometric patterns running lengthwise.
There are triangles with merlons (as required by Berber tradition), zigzags, crosses, chains,.....
They're made up of a knotted-stitch decoration with wide listels of penned chevrons in woven stitches, and formed of large and small lozenges, as are kilims.
This hanbel weaving is of great finesse. However, for practical reasons, it is commonly accepted to attribute this type of weaving to the Berber tribes.
