Mechkabad Carpet, 149 X 212 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool, Iran, First Part Of The 20th Century 1900-30
This beautiful antique rug from the early 20th century, between 1900 and 1930, is called Mechkabad.
It measures 149 cm wide by 212 cm long.
The rug is in excellent collector's condition; the wool is thick, soft, and of high quality.
These rugs originate from the village of the same name.
They were called Mahal and later Sarouk-mahal, as they come from the Mahallat region.
The town of Mechkabad, very important in the 19th century, was a major center for rug production.
Nowadays, it is no longer even marked on maps.
Today, abandoned by its inhabitants, only ruins remain, visible when taking the road from Arak to Qom, about 25 km from Arak on the right.
A midnight blue and ivory medallion with sixteen points, two of which run lengthwise and are shaped like broad halberds or fleur-de-lis, rests on a brown field. Copper-colored. The field, cut in ivory on the sides and at the corners in the shape of palm fronds, ends with four prominent spandrels.
The design found on these rugs often remains the same, using other colors, frequently blue and red.
The blues are exquisite: chamois, coppery brown almost rust-colored, almond green, and ivory adorn this rug, which is uncommon in these colors.
These pieces are always abundantly floral, and the design of flowers, palm fronds, bouquets, and individual flowers from the medallion is often repeated in the spandrels.
The border, with its sophisticated and highly legible design, features a garland of palm fronds separated by Monabat-kari peonies, creating a stunning effect.
Unfortunately, many people confuse them with other types of rugs and origins.
Our example is in very good condition for its age and is a beautiful collector's rug.
It exhibits the characteristics described above.
The fringes and selvedges (restored) are in very good condition.
Thick velvet and Solid.
This rug has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
