Important Kirman rug with a medallion design and floral border.
Beautiful rug with slight wear and a lovely patina.
In southeastern Iran, near the desert oasis of Dasht-e-Lut, lies the city of Kerman, with a population of approximately 350,000. More than 1,000 km from Tehran, Kerman was founded in the 4th century and was an essential meeting point for those traveling the trade routes between Iran and India, the Silk Road.
Over the centuries, various Masters have ruled the city: the Arabs, the Seljuks, and the Mongols. Until a few years ago, Kerman was a good starting point for those wishing to visit the ancient fortified city of Bam, 2,000 years old and located 200 km further south.
Bam was once a major tourist destination in Iran, sadly destroyed by an earthquake at Christmas 2003, in which more than 10,000 people perished.
The city of Kerman still has a pleasant atmosphere today, thanks to its mosques, bazaar districts, and tea houses. Carpet weaving has long been an important craft, and Kerman carpets are easy to recognize.
The main colors are often red and blue, and the design is often dominated by a central medallion with a wide floral border. Kerman carpets often feature floral decoration and most often have a medallion that stands out against a plain background.
The reputation of Kerman carpets and rugs is due to The excellence of the "Ostads," these incredibly skilled cartoon designers who have preserved the tradition of these great Persian carpets of the 16th and 17th centuries.
The profound harmony of colors results from a perfect balance that testifies to the great creativity of Kirman artisans. The finest carpets are the most admirable and beautiful; the greater the number of knots, the finer the carpet, and the more sought after it is by enthusiasts and collectors.
Some Kirman carpets are designated as Laver, a corruption of Raver, a town near Kirman where carpets are knotted with great care.
Antique Laver carpets are characterized by a large, polylobed medallion, roughly oval or rhomboidal, on an ivory background, with floral and plant motifs covering the carpet (our example), or a design of vases arranged in tiers, a motif also found on Kashmar carpets. These two types of carpets are extremely rare today and possess a chromatic delicacy particular to Kirman. Antique.
This category of rug is rightfully considered among the finest produced in Iran. The exquisite craftsmanship, delicate colors, and quality of the materials used make it a rare collector's item. This rug is in very good condition; the edges are sound, there are reinforcing bands underneath, and the fringes are in good condition. In short, this rug is a precise example of the Kirman type, rich in color and in good condition.
This rug has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
