Old Sarouk Ferahan, 140 X 190 Cm, Hand-knotted Kork Wool, Persia, Arak Region, Kadjar, 19th Century
Sarouk Ferahan or ancient Farahan from Persia, Iran.
This piece measures 140 cm in width by 190 cm in length. In very good collectible condition, this rug was hand-knotted in the 19th century during the reign of the Kadjar dynasty.
## The Kadjar dynasty or Kadjars: (Qājār, Qadjar, Qajar, Persian: قاجار) is a Turkmen dynasty which reigned over Iran from 1786 to 1925.
This carpet has beautiful colors, mainly a deep midnight blue field typical of Ferahan and yellow, orange-red, ivory and pale blue. These fresh colors carefully compose large foliage, flowers, arabesques and palms. The entire decoration presents a polylobed medallion just placed and sublime, very elaborate borders. The polylobed medallion and its two pendants surround a smaller ivory rosette with four pendants and play on the entire field of a very complex design. The shades are fresh and the soft, short velvet is in superb condition. The edges are impeccable as are the short fringes. The carpet is abundantly flowered, it has well-designed borders, contrasting shades of the most beautiful effect. Kork wool is the softest and silkiest wool taken from the first shearing of lambs, mainly under the neck and belly. It is treated on our model like silk, on a very tight, short velvet. This rug is a beautiful collector's item, decorative and comfortable. The decor is abundant, beautifully designed, high quality Kork wool. The Sarough carpet, or Sarouk, the Ecbatana of Antiquity, is knotted in a few villages near Sarouk in the agricultural region of Arak. European buying houses have had agencies there since the mid-19th century.
These rugs remain very popular in the United States where decorators appreciate the heavy and large luxurious wool pieces.
