Karakashly Rug, Caucasus, 108 X 193 Cm, Pre-1950, Hand-knotted Wool On Wool, Azerbaijan

A very beautiful Caucasian Karakashly rug, hand-knotted in very fine and soft wool on wool.
This lovely piece measures 108 cm wide by 193 cm long, was knotted before 1950, and is in very good condition.

Rare relief work on the motifs, executed with a chisel, typical of this style, gives the rug depth.
The color nuances used accentuate the relief.
This antique hand-knotted Caucasian rug is an archetypal example of regional oriental rugs originating from the Azerbaijani village of Karakashly.
This local variation of the Afshan Kuba motif features four right-angled medallions and cruciform designs surmounted by trees of life. These Karakashly hallmarks are accompanied by leaves and hooks.
Numerous stylized ram's horns, called "kochaks," demonstrate the importance of sheep farming in this region.
A four-tone color combination—orange, violet, camel, and ivory—creates a magnificent A truly luminous rug made from high-quality wool.
This prototypical Karakashly field is bordered with S-shaped hooks typical of the Caucasus, and secondary triangular borders resembling goblets that embody the essence of local tribal motifs.
Two small bands enclose a line of small S's, alternating in orange and ivory.
These S's symbolize God and the importance of the beliefs of these lands.
A line of ivory-colored camel-hair "medahils" (arrowheads) encloses this richly decorated piece.
A wide, sinuous band runs along the border, a symbol of water and eternity.
The fringes, edges, and pile are in magnificent condition.
Thanks to the superior quality of the wool, their tight knotting, the beauty of the natural colors, and their ancestral designs, Caucasian rugs rank among the finest tribal rugs.
