Tribal Rug, Kurdish Area, North-western Iran, Late 19th – Early 20th Century
Ancient tribal rug attributable to the Kurdish weaving tradition of north-western Iran, dating to the late 19th or very early 20th century. The rug features a deep red field decorated with three large lozenge-shaped medallions aligned vertically, connected by a central axis, following an archaic and highly symbolic compositional scheme typical of Kurdish tribal production. The medallions, with angular and stepped outlines, are filled with geometric motifs and surrounded by a dense secondary decoration that animates the entire surface. The borders, composed of multiple bands, display hooked, serrated and angular geometric motifs, executed with expressive energy and natural irregularity, characteristic of tribal weaving. The color palette, dominated by reds, dark blues, ivory and rust-orange tones, shows attractive tonal variations resulting from the use of natural dyes.Hand-knotted on wool warp and weft, the rug has a robust structure and a compact texture, today highly appreciated for both its decorative impact and its authenticity. The condition is good: wear is even and consistent with age, borders are well preserved, fringes are shortened but sound; no invasive restorations are visible. The surface displays a fine, attractive patina.Dimensions:125 × 225 cmA characterful rug, representative of the finest Kurdish tribal production, suitable for both refined interiors and discerning collectors. Please feel free to contact us for further information, photographs or technical details.Worldwide shipping available with professional packaging.
