Mechkabad Rug, 149 X 212 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool, Iran, Early 20th Century, 1900–1930

A beautiful antique Mechkabad rug from the early 20th century, circa 1900–1930.
It measures 149 cm wide by 212 cm long.
The rug is in excellent collectible condition; the wool is thick, soft, and of high quality.
These rugs originate from the village of the same name.
They were originally called Mahal and later Sarouk-mahal, as they come from the Mahallat region.
The city of Mechkabad, which was very important in the 19th century, was a major center for rug production.
Nowadays, it isn’t even marked on maps.
Today, it has been abandoned by its inhabitants and stands empty.
Only ruins remain, visible when traveling from Arak to Qom, about 25 km from Arak on the right-hand side.
A midnight-blue medallion bordered in Persian blue and ivory, with sixteen points—two of which run lengthwise in the shape of broad halberds or fleurs-de-lis—set against a coppery-brown field.
The field, bordered by ivory palm motifs on the sides and at the corners, ends with four large floral spandrels on a Persian blue background.
The design found on these rugs often remains the same but uses different colors, frequently blue and red.
The blues are truly beautiful; buff, coppery brown verging on rust, almond green, and ivory adorn this rug, which is uncommon in these colors.
These pieces are always richly floral, and the design of flowers, palm leaves, bouquets, and individual flowers from the medallion is repeated in the spandrels.
The border, with its sophisticated and clear design, features a garland of palm leaves separated by Monabat-kari peonies, creating a stunning effect.
Unfortunately, many people confuse them with other types of rugs and origins.
Our example is in very good condition for its age and is a beautiful collector’s rug.
It exhibits the characteristics described above.
The fringes and selvedges (restored) are in very good condition.
Thick, sturdy pile.
