Kashan Rug, 127 X 204 Cm, Hand-knotted From Kork Wool In Iran Circa 1930–1950, In Very Good Condition
Artist: Art D'iran
Kashan rug from the first half of the 20th century, 1930–1950, hand-knotted from fine, dense wool.
This rug measures 127 cm wide by 204 cm long.
These antique pieces are finer than modern rugs.
The designs are often a thousand times more abundant, richer, and more extraordinary.
The central cross motif forms a large, blooming flower set within another medallion.
This cross motif is considered a revival of the Christian cross, influenced by the Crusades.
Persian blue interlacing and orange branchwork, accompanied by two pendants running the length of the rug on an ivory background, make up this piece, which is embellished with a very beautiful border.
The entire field is covered with numerous flowers and palm leaves, in a sophisticated and complex design.
Similar but more vivid colors are found in the corners (called spandrels), which are knotted with arabesques.
The wide midnight-blue border consists of varied motifs, also floral, and features large, complex palmettes predominantly in red.
The overall condition is very good; there is no pile loss, the selvedges are sound, and the patina is wonderful.
The delicate colors blend together beautifully.
## Kashan (Kachan, Keshan): a major city in central Iran.
During the Persian Renaissance, in the 16th and 17th centuries, Kashan was the center of production for carpets of legendary splendor.
Finely woven carpets, with exceptionally rich compositions, were knotted by the royal workshop of Shah Abbas.
They became masterpieces displayed in museums and private collections around the world.
Carpet production in Kashan came to a halt between the Afghan invasion (1722) and the end of the 19th century, around 1870.
The revival of carpet production began with carpets distinguished by the superior quality of their wool, which gives them an extremely velvety appearance.
These pieces are called Kashan Motashemi, named after one of the most famous master weavers of the late 19th century.
The designs are varied and meticulously crafted: hunting scenes, figurative subjects inspired by Persian mythology, birds set against a botanical backdrop, trees of life, and visions of an earthly paradise.
Thanks to the superior quality of the wool, (Kork wool from the Iranian highlands, as well as imported wool), their tight knotting, the beauty of their natural colors, and their designs of great delicacy and finesse, Kashan rugs have earned their place among the finest Persian rugs.
This rug has been professionally cleaned using eco-friendly methods.
