Persian Isfahan or Ispahan rug in kork wool.
This piece measures 151 cm wide by 254 cm long, hand-knotted in the late 19th/early 20th century, between 1890 and 1910. The decoration is highly elaborate for this type of Persian rug, considered among the finest found in Iran.
This museum-quality rug still has its beautiful provenance label on the reverse.
The decoration features traditional floral motifs found in 17th-century rugs and in mosques, as well as on ancient ceramics. Roses and daisies are easily recognizable in the interlacing patterns, appearing on the field and borders, often knotted in these rugs.
The border and its counter-borders are exceptionally sophisticated, with a particularly fine arrangement of interlacing patterns and flowers.
The design of the central square medallion, characteristic of these rugs, with its elegant pendant extensions, and the corner motifs demonstrate great craftsmanship. research.
The colors are pleasing and have remained fresh: three shades of blue—salmon, natural cream, terracotta, and coral—and three shades of green—anise, bronze, and olive. Blue-gray followed by black are shades one occasionally encounters.
That makes thirteen colors.
We find it difficult to imagine the infinite patience required and still required to create such a beautiful piece.
It has a density of approximately 640,000 knots per square meter and a thickness of 5 millimeters.
The edges are in very good condition.
There is slight wear consistent with age for a rug over 100 years old, which can easily be considered in very good condition.
