Tea Tray, Ottoman Art From The 19th Century, Tulip Decoration On Copper, Hand-engraved
Large red copper tea tray, chased with a burin of tulips set in single and double cartouches linked together.
The central decoration consists of a twelve-pointed rosette from which cartouches and tulips radiate in concentric friezes.
The edge of the tray is scalloped.
Twelve round, recessed medallions hold twelve tea glasses or coffee glasses, separated by decorative bossing.
A very beautiful piece of folk art from Oriental art with a superb patina! Ottoman art, 19th century.
The word "coffee" is thought to come from the ancient Arabic word "qahwa" - also written "caoua" or "kawa" - which refers to any stimulating beverage providing strength and vigor, but also to coffee or the coffee bean itself.
Diameter: 49.5 cm (19"), weight: 1405 g.
