Hand-knotted Kashan kork wool rug from Iran, circa 1980. This magnificent piece measures 123 cm wide by 190 cm long. It features a pointed niche design in a dominical shape, ending in a fretwork-like motif. Twin columns support the niche's arch. Numerous trees of life, vases and bouquets of flowers, birds, bunches of grapes, and columns embellish the design, creating a vision of paradise. The overall composition is perfect, and great care has been taken with the beautiful border, finished with four braids. These large niche rugs are not intended for prayer. They are heavy and designed for interior decoration in Iranian homes, both on the floor and walls, or in many homes worldwide. The rug is in perfect condition; there is no shrinkage, and the fine kork wool used is of the highest quality. The colors are fresh, soft, and delicate, with deep shades of red, blue, almond green, and burgundy. They blend perfectly with ivory and support many other colors. A truly beautiful carpet. Kashan (Kachan, Keshan): a large city in central Iran. During the Persian Renaissance, Kashan was the center of carpet production, renowned for its legendary splendor. Finely woven carpets of great composition were knotted by the royal manufactory of Shah Abbas. They became the centerpieces of museums and private collections. Carpet production ceased in Kashan between the Afghan invasion (1722) and the end of the 19th century. The revival of carpet production began with carpets distinguished by the superior quality of the wool, giving them an extremely velvety appearance. These examples are called Kashan Motashemi, named after the most famous master weaver of the late 19th century. The designs are varied and meticulously crafted: hunting scenes, figurative subjects inspired by Persian mythology, birds in a vegetal setting, Trees of Life.
