Antique Ferahan Rug, 129 X 186 Cm, Hand-knotted In Iran, Late 18th - Early 19th Century
Antique Férahan rug, late 18th century, possibly early 19th century.
This piece measures 129 cm wide by 186 cm long.
Hand-knotted wool artifact in good condition, decorated with the Herati motif and four small spandrels.
Provenance: Farāhān Plain (Shahrestān of Arāk and Tafresh, Ostān Markazi).
Knot: Persian knot.
Weaving method: Vertical loom.
Wool pile, very short.
Cotton warp and weft, double weft.
Knot density: 1,200 to 2,500 knots/dm².
Sizes: 130 cm-140 cm x 200 cm & 150 cm x 300 cm and 250 cm x 600 cm.
# The border of genuine antique Férahan rugs has a curious effect due to the manipulation of a mixture of a plant, a Persian euphorbia and copper sulfate, which produces "wolf's milk" as the locals call it.
This composition has a corrosive effect on the carpet's pile, resulting in the lime green color typical of these very old carpets. This chemical reaction allows the border decoration on our model to stand out in relief.
The border is very important. It consists of a series of narrow bands with a tightly woven design.
The outer bands have geometric patterns, and the inner bands feature stylized flowers, or Boteh.
A few very rare examples have a field and borders exclusively decorated with the zil-i sultan motif.
The border colors are frequently light and bright: yellow, light green, blue and white, orange, peach. Farahan rugs were long a favorite of the English, with their soft and appealing colors.
The characteristic decoration was the Herati motif with its rosette, lozenge, and curled leaves.
These rugs originate from the Feraghan district, east of Arak, a region in a fertile plain in Iran. Our example is in good condition for its age and exhibits the characteristics described above.
It is a beautiful collector's item. As the wool becomes drier with age, wall decoration remains more in keeping with this type of room. The Farahan, Ferahan, or Feraghan rug is the commercial name.
Persian carpets woven in the Farahan Plain.
This plain is located northwest of Shahrestan in Arak and south of Shahrestan in Tafrevo in central Iran.
They were knotted in the city of Mushkabad, destroyed in the 19th century on the orders of Fath Ali Shah.
This carpet has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
Dimensions: Width: 129 cm (47") x Length: 186 cm (73") Thickness: 4 mm.
