Panderma Rug, 119 X 174 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool From Turkey, Circa 1900, In Very Good Condition

Panderma rug, 119 x 174 cm, early 20th century, hand-knotted wool in Turkey, very good condition Panderma prayer rug, circa 1900/1920 in hand-knotted wool.
Width 119 cm x length 174 cm in magnificent condition.
Panderma today, Bandirma is located in the Marmara region of Turkey.
The Bandirma workshops so formerly Panderma were partly closed just before World War II.
These fine rugs are usually presented as prayer rugs, with a plain mihrab in the center in delicate shades of old pink, pistachio, ivory or pale blue, the color of our model.
The blue symbolizing fidelity and spiritual life is rare on this type of rug.
The vast majority of prayer rugs are large rebuses, mind games, faith games, as requested by the rug's sponsor.
These rebuses consist in expressing words or phrases through calligraphy, drawings, colors and signs, the phonetic reading of which reveals what is intended to be heard.
It's always difficult to decipher and translate them.
Prayer rugs are quite often in good or very good condition, devotional objects of Muslim worship par excellence, they were very carefully put away after use.

A wide, slightly serrated board from which the Mihrab (niche) emerges, is covered with stylized yellow and red eyelets, placed in a very geometric fashion, as is the whole piece.
Above, a necklace of clouds, the white "Tchi" symbol on a red background, punctuated with blue flowers symbolizes paradise.
A wide border sown with pomegranates or red poppies on a white background, go in pairs hung on stems and leaves in a bold geometric design that's so stylized it's hard to interpret.
In the Mediterranean basin and Asia:
- The pomegranate is the symbol of marriage, fertility and above all love, and is a motif found on some rugs.
- The red poppy or the poppy, like many flowers of this color symbolizes death or human sacrifice, devotion, which is a rational explanation, the poppy is also the representation of darkness ( goddess Nyx ) in Greece, very close.
This symbolism is based on the narcotic and hypnotic properties of the poppy, a plant found generously in these lands and widely used in certain regions and religions.
However, the pomegranate and its symbolism are present in Anatolia and the Caucasus on many carpets.
The drawing tends more towards the representation of a fruit than a flower.
We must not forget to specify that these carpets never represent the apple.
If some people may have said or written it, this fruit, even if it represents knowledge, is also the forbidden fruit and a symbol of erotic associations in the West as in the East.
On the other hand, the representation of the apple blossom is a symbol of good omen and welcome.
The two bands, one red, the other cream, along the main border are decorated with carnation flowers.
The carnation is the symbol of knotters in Turkey, and adorns many carpets.

This piece is proof of the beauty and finesse of execution that Turkish weavers brought to their work, contributing to the spiritual elevation and devotion of their patrons.
There is a slight resemblance in symmetry with the wonderful Koula carpets, but the geometry of the Panderma is stricter.
