Persian Malayer Rug – Early 20th Century
Hand-knotted Persian rug, attributable to the Malayer production, a region in western Iran known for crafting elegant and richly decorated carpets. The piece can be dated to the early decades of the 20th century (circa 1920–1930).
The design features a central dark lozenge-shaped medallion with pendants, set within an ivory field richly decorated with stylised floral motifs, rosettes and polychrome vine scrolls. The outer field, dark and densely patterned, displays a modular floral composition of geometric and botanical elements, enhanced by refined chromatic variations (abrash) ranging from green to blue and red. The main border, in deep red, is flanked by minor floral borders on a light background.
The rug is made of wool on cotton weft and warp, knotted with asymmetrical (Persian) knots. The natural tones remain vibrant, in a harmonious palette of reds, blues, ochres, greens, and pinks.
It shows some signs of wear in the central area, consistent with its age and use, and a restorative seam along one edge, carried out by hand. Overall, the rug remains structurally sound and visually captivating.
Size: 143 × 215 cm
