Today I offer you an old carpet, a magnificent and rare Kurdish Herki kilim from the regions of Eastern Anatolia and Northern Iraq. This beautiful artifact in good condition, despite surface wear, normal for its pedigree, measures 148 cm wide by 235 cm long.
The composition of these pieces is adorned with rare and magnificent colors. Our model is covered in the center with fifteen stepped mandorlas, set within a border of tribal motifs. The warp is wool.
The pattern weft is also made of wool. Carpet from the mid to late 19th century. Iraqi Kurds are mainly concentrated in the mountainous regions of Anatolia, northern and northeastern Iraq.
A people originating from Central Asia, the Kurds are Sunni Muslims, they retain their Kurdish national identity and resist change, regardless of the country in which they reside. Kurdish kilims are characterized by a weaving technique which often leaves long floating wefts on the back of the kilim and often braided ends with long fringes rarely present on very old models.
# The main tribes who weave kilims in these regions are the Herkis, the Dizais, the Yazidis and the Surchis.
Among them, the Herkis were and are the most gifted and prolific weavers.
They produce flat weaves using the weft winding technique.
Kilims are generally woven in two parts and assembled for models 160 cm wide and over. The old 18th and 19th century designs are very variable and the colors include dark reds, browns and blues, with a little white.
(See the other Herki that we present on Proantic with magnificent colors) The more modern kilims from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century present pink, orange, white. ### Work of other tribes:
# The Dizais are today largely sedentary. They weave some bags and accessories, and their split kilims are not very different from the striped kilims of Malatya.
# The Yazidis of northern Mosul make both split-weave and extra-weave kilims, the designs of which are usually arranged in horizontal stripes. The split weave variety resembles those made near Van, Hakkari region, Turkey.
# The kilims of the Surchis are similar to those of the Herkis, except the designs tend to be a little larger.
Iraqi Kurdish kilims do not appear very often in the markets, with the exception of a few pieces from Herki, and there is no doubt that with the upheavals following the Gulf War, other wars and the numerous movements of populations, kilims will be difficult to find in the future.
