Maffrash Karabag Caucasus. Circa 1880. 132 X 112 Cm
At first glance, what catches the eye is the extreme finesse of the weaving, a refinement that obviously reflects the immense dexterity of the weaver.
The motifs are executed with infinite precision, seemingly sculpted into the material.
Maffrash belong to the large family of everyday objects used by the nomadic populations of Persia and the Caucasus.
There are different types of saddlebags in various formats, cereal pouches, salt pouches and the famous Maffrash. The decorative vocabulary places this Maffrash among the Armenian productions without any doubt.
Sumak technique for the 2 large outer panels, the central part is woven in the form of successive multicolored bands.
Wool on wool.
Exclusively vegetable colors, dense and saturated. Beautiful depths and luminosity, all in a totally mastered harmony.
The indigo blues on the central part are marvelous, of incredible purity. This is great art!
You'd think, given the number of Maffrash in our collection, that these pieces would be quite common. On the contrary, they're virtually impossible to find, except with other collectors with whom we've been in close contact for over 25 years.
The dexterity of the weavers is particularly evident in the Maffrash. They are true works of art, refined objects, treasures of the past.
