Khorassan has been famous for centuries for the great beauty of its carpets,
our model is no exception to the rule.
Velvet in good condition,
fine, an old restoration, 5 cm.
Selvedges in good condition requiring no intervention.
Non-existent fringes.
Density: 480,000 knots per m2
This highly elaborate piece in very finely hand-knotted wool, for a thickness of 4 mm,
measures 168 cm in length and 116 cm in width.
Khorassan are renowned for their great elegance, the classic type is decorated with repeated motifs, either botehs or a Herati decoration.
# The design called Herati is after the city of Herat which was part of Khorassan in the 19th century.
Mahi motif, Persian floral design, used above all in Khorassan and Ferahan, design meaning fish in Persian and corresponding to the Herati pattern.
- The wool of the Khorassan is fine silky and delicate.
- Our Kain model presents a palette of typical shades, clear, almost faded, orange and pistachio green dominate associated with other colors.
- The medallion having some resemblances with the Kashan type, shows us two small pendants in terminations and is found in colors and designs in the spandrels;
- The flowery and delicate border is adorned with the same shades as the pistachio field covered with a Herati decoration also called Mahi.
There are three types of Khorassan /
- the classic, our model,
-- A type with a plain field or can occasionally present multiple medallions;
- The rarest Khorassan, with animals, lions, tigers, antelopes and deer, in hunting decoration.
These pieces knotted for centuries (16th century for the oldest) are located in the Northeast of Persia, Iran whose capital is Meshed (Macchad), a border region of Afghanistan and Baluchistan.

Eastern part of the Sassanid Empire, Khorassan is considered by Afghans as the medieval name of Afghanistan since it extended from the Northeast of Persia (present-day Iran) throughout the territory of present-day Afghanistan and included the south of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to the Oxus River (The Amu Darya).In addition to Khorassan carpets, Persian, it is not uncommon to find carpets, Afghan, Baluchis, Turkmens, these ethnic groups have lived there for centuries.
Khorasan is renowned for its famous carpets and the cultivation of saffron in the south of the province.
