Khorjin (antique Bag). Qashqai. Persia. Circa 1900. 60 X 52 Cm
In a state of preservation bordering on the miraculous, a superb Qashqai Khorjin originating from Persia.
All the artistry of ancient Persian weaving is embodied in this small, resplendent treasure.
Khorjins are pouches once used by the nomadic peoples of Persia. They are often double pouches. This piece can therefore be considered a fragment—a single pouch.
The knotted-stitch side reveals variations in indigo blue hues, ranging from deep midnight blue to lighter tones. This is known as “abrash.” The pile is approximately 1 cm long; to the touch, you can feel the extreme softness of the hand-spun wool. Sensational.
The central motif is a stylized scorpion containing a floral pattern. This scorpion powerfully and prominently symbolizes protection against the evil eye.
The fastening system at the top is intact; it is woven. The front is knotted with a short pile. The back is woven. Here again, one can appreciate the alluring presence of several shades of indigo blue, with an almost liquid-like appearance.
