Medallions placed on a bed of salmon-colored botehs, a color found on some old rugs:
Sarough, Tafresh, Hamadan and Afshar.
Afshari rug, (Avshar) hand-knotted in very good quality wool, executed with careful work and of high aesthetic quality from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
It measures 120 cm wide by 155 cm long, in beautiful complex native shades.
The color treatment was made with plants and minerals, as evidenced by the black parts having no oxidation.
The ornamentation of this piece of great finesse is composed of two geometric medallions.
The salmon field covered with small botehs placed in inverted lines and surrounded by a hexagon border representing stylized flowers. They are all bordered by two braids of a Very fine workmanship composed of multicolored stitches.
At the bottom of the field, a beautiful change of red wool passes to salmon.
It is likely that the knotter changed his mind during the composition of the carpet by finding the salmon more vivid, better highlighting the decoration of the botehs.
The salmon pink shade called "dughi", was obtained by adding yogurt, called "dugh" to the other natural dyes of these old carpets. The carpet is in good condition considering its age and has a slight central wear of the pile which does not detract from the beauty of this beautiful old carpet.
The colors are bright and give it a magnificent cachet.
A very beautiful example in its own juice which will please the connoisseur with wear of use.
The ends have very short fringes, as on almost all antique carpets.
In the south-east of Iran, around the city of Kerman, lived the semi-nomadic Afshar tribe.
For a long time, these nomads lived in the north-west of Iran, but part of the population moved to the south-east where carpet making represented an important economic sector since the middle of the 19th century.
These carpets have shades of pink, red, ochre, many blues, purple and the majority of them bear geometric patterns.
The most common pattern used is composed of a large central field with one or more square medallions.
Some decorations seem to represent the skin of animals stretched before being tanned.
What is typical of Afshar carpets is that they are relatively wide compared to their length.
Afshar carpets are also marketed under the name Sirdjan carpets. A collector's item above all.
This superb rug is a work of art close to modern art that can easily be hung on the wall.
This rug has been professionally and ecologically cleaned. Light traces of wear, which gives this type of ethnic rug its authentic character.
A beautiful piece due to its construction and the quality of the wool and the design.
