Berber Water Jug, Hand-painted Terracotta, H 44 Cm, Haouz, Morocco, Early 20th Century

Artist: Art Des Berbères
These exquisite antique pottery pieces are rare, feminine pottery from the Rif, the Haouz, and the High Atlas
(see the Macma collections in Marrakech)

Our large-sized piece with a thick handle, a filling opening, and a spout is in excellent condition and dates from the early 20th century.
The traditional manganese-based paint remains very visible on the upper part of the body.

These pottery pieces exude a striking sense of modernity and a keen sense of proportion.
They are still used in the fields or by shepherds, though this is becoming rare, as they have been replaced by plastic!

Dimensions: diameter 23 cm (9.5"), height: 44 cm - (17"), weight: 3,943 grs

## This jug-like vessel is typical of the Mediterranean regions.
The gargoulette is known for keeping water cool.
Made from a porous material—clay—the water moistens the outer surface as it passes through the pores of the unglazed clay.
As the water evaporates, it uses energy by releasing its own heat, thereby cooling the inside of the gargoulette.
The gargoulette has been depicted in many paintings by great artists—Van Gogh, Matisse, Goya, and Cézanne all included them in their works—and yet few of us have noticed them...
Condition—Signs of use; this is not a “tourist souvenir,”
but a genuine antique water jug.
