Chalice Vase, 63 Cm High, Chased Brass, Islamic Art From The 18th/19th Century, Very Good Condition
Important, large, chased brass vase, 63 cm high.
It is decorated all over with calligraphy, braids, trellises, mandorlas, and medallions, all hand-engraved with a burin.
Brass is a yellow alloy, composed primarily of copper and zinc in varying proportions, the direct production of which from suitable ores was already mastered by metallurgists before Antiquity.
The fineness and quality of the chasing on this vase demonstrate the dexterity of the engraver of this piece, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century.
The inverted chalice base supports a bulbous body, surmounted by a long, ringed neck ending in a slender chalice.
The body is marvelously crafted with interlacing patterns, evoking the idea of a labyrinth; rondels, braids, and numerous epigraphic decorations fill the spaces, culminating in complex Arabic knots.
Numerous friezes of Braids separate the large decorative elements.
A true masterpiece of Islamic art!
These marvelous antique brass and copper pieces were, under the Muslim dynasties, a prominent alternative to silver and enjoyed the same status.
The color whose symbolism is easiest to understand is gold; its association with the sun and gold made it an emblem of divine power, perfection, and majesty.
These objects certainly served as centerpieces in homes and palaces.
