Mid-20th-century hand-knotted Baluchi wool rug.

Made of wool over wool and in very good condition.
It measures 92 cm wide by 139 cm long,

148 cm including the fringes.
Colors include camel, wine red, azure blue, rust, straw yellow, and ivory.
The field features a complex, regular pattern in camel, bordered by a narrow border with three bands of ethnic motifs.

A kilim finish is found at each end of the rug, followed by short beige fringes made of blended wool.
This design helps us understand how and with what creativity figures, plants, and figurative scenes can be transformed and rendered into abstract, recognizable patterns—all by nomadic tribes whose weaving traditions and techniques are passed down solely through oral and hands-on instruction.

One might be led to believe that Baluchi rugs originate from Baluchistan, which is by no means the case.
They are knotted further north, in Khorasan, Iran, on the Russian-Iranian border; in fact, the most beautiful designs are named after Mecched, the capital of Khorasan.

These are nomadic rugs, so they tend to be fairly small; until recently, the warp and weft were always made of wool, but cotton has now replaced wool, though the Persian knot is still used.
Our model is still made of wool on wool.

The wide variety of motifs used reflects Persian influence, and the geometric patterns link them to the family of Central Asian carpets—though this is not actually the case.
The field is typically camel or wine-colored, especially for prayer rugs.
The interior design often features highly elaborate geometric patterns accompanied by numerous symbols.
