Karabakh Rug, 154 X 240 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool/wool, Caucasus, Second Half Of The 19th Century

Karabakh or Karabagh rug, originating from Armenia, Caucasus.
Piece from the second half of the 19th century.
On a red field typical of the Karabakh style, at the center is a large medallion decorated with large roses.
The design is influenced by French Savonnerie rugs, with multicolored floral scrolls.
Around this medallion, four bouquets of roses complete the field.
The vibrancy of the colors gives this type of rug a great cheerfulness.
A fine black Greek key pattern on a white background delimits the border composed of bouquets of flowers, again stylized roses. This densely knotted rug, with 360,000 knots per square meter, has a wool pile on a wool foundation.
The colors are remarkably fresh and it is in excellent condition for its age.
While there are some areas of wear, they do not detract from the beauty and quality of this large Karabakh rug.
It is important to remember that these antique rugs have been used for generations and that wear and patina are to be expected. This is therefore normal, which makes them even more beautiful.
Note the different red wool dyes on the field and the modernity of the designs, particularly the central bouquet, which could be mistaken for a color silkscreen print.

An antique rug remains an antique rug. Rugs made before 1925 are defined into five groups: Kazakh, Karabakh, Uzhirvan, Kuban, and Dagestani.
Rugs from the Karabakh region often have delicate patterns and are reminiscent of Persian rugs.
Outside of this classification, there are also Ganja, Silea, and Varnish rugs.
These rugs are distinguished by their highly varied and imaginative geometric patterns.
Sometimes, stylized animal figures or geometric and architectural motifs are found.
This rug has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
