Julhir Rug, 160 X 256 Cm, Silk & Cotton Threads Embroidered On Woven Cotton, Uzbekistan, Tôt XX
Artist: Art D'ouzbékistan
Julhir rug, 160 cm x 256 cm, Uzbekistan,
from the first part of the 20th century.
These flat-woven rugs were traditionally made on simple wooden looms.
These nomadic looms could be easily folded for transport.
This made them perfectly suited to a nomadic lifestyle.
Not widely known these rugs somewhat resemble kilims or thick blanket weaving.
They are embroidered with silk thread and cotton yarn.
Our model is decorated with 60 Medes stars, half of which are antique pink and the other half bright red on four panels.
Dominant colors also include dark gray, orange and almond green, as well as an almost royal blue.
From each side of the carpet run two rounded Greek borders, similar to the "running dog" motif found in the Caucasus mountains.
These carpets were traditionally laid on the floor, but were also used as wall decoration, just like the Suzanis also made in Uzbekistan.
Coarse woollen threads are woven on wooden spindles used by the ancients since time immemorial.
These spindles are still used today by craftsmen around Dzhizak and Nurata, to create the famous Julhir rugs, woven in a supple manner.
Made from long, narrow strips sewn together to a length of around 50 cm, these carpets feature a specific pattern of diamond-bordered stripes (Etoile de Mèdes, a motif very present in the Caucasus) and triangles.
Also found are stylized flowers.
Nowadays, wool or cotton yarns are preferred.
Hand-woven carpets made in Bukhara are considered the finest in the country, while Surkhan Darya carpets are renowned for their unique two-tone yarns.
Traditionally hand-woven, all Uzbek carpets are custom-made and can come in all shapes and sizes, from small prayer rugs, to large luxurious carpets destined for a wealthy clientele .
As each region developed its own style, carpets were appreciated as much for their artistic value as for their functionality, and were always considered a symbol of prosperity, good taste and domestic comfort.
The largest collection is said to have belonged to the Emir of Bukhara, who had over 10,000 carpets in his palace.
Even today, richly patterned carpets are still preferred for wedding gifts.
The shimmering blue, red, green and gold colors are achieved by using natural plant-based dyes from indigo, turmeric root and pomegranate peel to dye the silk threads.
Like embroidery, carpet knotting is traditionally reserved for women, and the techniques are passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter.
Still today, young women can often be seen sitting behind their looms in homes, workshops or outdoors.
This carpet has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
