Tekké Carpet From The Yomoud Turkmen, 160 X 246 Cm, Gul Tauk-nuska, An Extremely Rare 19th-century Design

This rare carpet features the Tauk-Nuska gul of the following tribes:
Yomud, Tschaudor, Kisilayak, Ersari, and Arabatchi.

# Octagonal outer shape.
# Center: a cross with kotchaks (ram’s horns) within a hexagon.
# Field: eight Armenian symbols derived from the letters of the alphabet—77 crossed-out in our example—or eight floral crosses
#   This same gul pattern appears on a 159 cm x 271 cm rug from Dr. Fritz Nagel’s Kunstauktionhaus

# Woven in wool over wool with approximately 528,000 knots per square meter
#   Warp made of fine goat hair at both ends, in its natural color.
# Persian knot

Tekke rug knotted by the Yomud Turkmen of Central Asia, made of wool.
It measures 160 cm wide by 246 cm long and is in good condition.

# The pattern is consistently repeated across the field:
19 large, highly elaborate medallions arranged vertically in a row of 4. 
This amounts to a total of 76 guls, lending this rug great elegance and a heraldic character.
Colors: Persian blue, orange, chestnut, wine-red, midnight blue, pine green, lichen, and ivory.
One can also notice color variations intentionally created by the weaver.

Finishes: kilim-style at both ends.
Typically, the borders are the same color as the field; this is part of the nomadic way of life, which avoids all forms of ostentation. However, the design here is very delicate—I invite you to take a close look.

# # Usually, the tribe had its own “gul,” likely serving as a rallying emblem.
The soft, lustrous wool is knotted very tightly, resulting in a dense and very fine weave.
The pile lies flat against the surface, and this rug has a beautiful patina due to its age.
Antique Turkmen rugs are of very high quality.

In other regions, nomadic rugs are often loosely knotted and have long pile, unlike Afghan or Turkmen rugs, which feature dense, tight knots using the Persian knot, velvet-like strands, and goat or sheep’s wool pile that is supple and lustrous.
Goat and camel hair are more commonly used for the warp and weft.
These rugs have a masculine aura and have been prized since the 19th century for decorating businessmen’s offices.
These majestic rugs are certainly the finest in Central Asia and are the work of Turkmen tribes.
The same knotting style and motifs are found in carpets from neighboring Turkmenistan as well as in Afghanistan.
Along with Caucasian carpets, these remain among the hardest to distinguish, as the motifs are so numerous and specific to the clans throughout Central Asia.
