"Ishtar"
"Ancient Scriptures" collection
Some details:
The seal used dates from the Paleo-Babylonian period (1925-1595 BC). It is a black hematite seal.
It shows a standing goddess, dressed in a kanakès, wearing a horned tiara, her hair up in a bun, raising both hands in front of her. Opposite her stands a warrior king, dressed in a short tunic, holding a staff of command in his left hand.
The scene is organized in three-row cartouches, of which only one and a half rows are inscribed.
The writing is a partial copy from a crapaudine.
The piece is referenced in the Louvre under number AO 101.
It is a consecration to the goddess Ba'u.
In this object, we discover a subtle combination of textures and colors. The lid, evocative of wood, is reminiscent in shape and feel of a small barrel.
The soft enamel reveals a luminous heart at its center when opened - a signature characteristic of Claude's work.
The underside also holds a surprise: when the piece is turned over, a celestial blue appears, framing the base and contrasting with a milky white.
A particularly pleasing object to hold in the hand and contemplate.
