Taurus Mountains Kilim. Anatolia. Circa 1880. 320 X 140 Cm
A marvelous kilim from the Mut region in the Taurus Mountains.
This region is iconic, and extraordinary pieces from there are found in very limited quantities.
Here is a perfect example: this antique kilim with a field design that is, to say the least, enigmatic.
The piece is powerful in its simplicity, fluidity, almost sonic vibrations, and highly decorative appearance. It almost feels like a work of pictorial art.
It’s a true work of art that can be placed on the floor or hung on the wall.
The piece is instantly comprehensible; it evokes emotion at first glance with its succession of undulating vertical lines that span the entire field from one end to the other.
It’s hard to imagine that this piece dates back to the late 19th century when you look at the weave and the colors—it has such a graphic, design-oriented aesthetic.
I don’t particularly like this expression, but it sticks in my mind: It’s a UFO!
The palette of exclusively plant-based dyes is limited but completely self-sufficient. What else is there?
The masterful harmony is perfect.
