Van Lake Kilim. Eastern Anatolia. Circa 1930. 140 X 110 Cm
Originating from the Lake Van region in the far east of Anatolia, this kilim is distinguished by a composition of horizontal bands, in which very different geometric motifs alternate with more subdued areas of color. The diamonds, crosses, and stylized shapes create a steady rhythm without ever giving the impression of mechanical repetition. The reds, deep blues, muted greens, and ivory backgrounds complement each other perfectly. The bright pink hue alone creates a sense of depth on the kilim’s surface. The composition is highly structured, yet also leaves ample room for the weaver’s creativity.
The piece is woven from wool on wool. The hand-spun wool is visible in the fringes, displaying the “salt-and-pepper” appearance so common in Kurdish weavings from eastern Anatolia.
