şarkışla Kilim / Anatolia. Circa 1930. 168 X 106 Cm. Rug
A mihrab at the heart of the kilim
The eye is first drawn to the large red field. Its slender silhouette, crowned with a point, forms a stylized mihrab and provides the composition with its axis—almost its architecture. Within it, a series of small geometric motifs enlivens the surface without disrupting its order. The extreme fineness of the weave lends them remarkable precision: each shape stands out with sharp, almost chiseled contours. This arrangement evokes the mihraplı kilims of the Sivas region.
Against a background of ecru wool, subtly greige, the geometric shapes of the border stand out, repeated in a mirror pattern. Their curved arms evoke the elibelinde, a female figure traditionally associated with motherhood, fertility, and family happiness. The dark bands lend depth to the red field, while the gray border, punctuated by small colored crosses, balances the composition. The design thus combines graphic strength with a soft color palette.
