Turkmen / Ersari Rug. Circa 1900. 163 X 107 Cm
A superb rug; pieces of this size are extremely rare. This is one side of a Khorjin or Torba—in other words, a fragment, the side of a huge bag. Attributed to the Ersari Turkmen nomads based on the stylized border motifs, the piece is woven and knotted using wool-on-wool technique.
At first glance, one is immediately captivated by the great depth of the exclusively plant-based dyes, which are dense and saturated. The magnificent indigo blue that stands out against a solid madder-red field is simply stunning.
It is precisely these hues that allow us to date the piece to the very early 20th century, circa 1900–1920.
The piece has just come out of our restoration workshop; Saïd has completely reworked the borders, and each end is finished with a bar tack. The surface was intact except for a few minor snags, which have now been removed.
The pile is short, as is always the case with antique Turkmen kilims.
A true collector’s item in perfect condition and in an unusual size.
