Verneh Kilim / Caucasus. Circa 1870. 233 X 183 Cm

This piece fascinates me, and I’m afraid I’ll have a hard time expressing my admiration.
Everything about it is remarkable; the design is very rare—even exclusive!
It is a kilim from Verneh in Azerbaijan, in the Caucasus.
At first glance, one is instantly captivated by the omnipresence of indigo blues in various shades.
Next, the embroidered motifs on the surface create a refined sense of depth through a succession of horizontal bands that unfold majestically along the entire length. A boundless field without any border.
The harmony of the plant-based dyes creates a delicate interplay of light and shadow, where the brown-ochre sections contrast with blues of infinite depth.
Purity and elegance, all within a timeless composition.
Woven wool-on-wool, the weave is surprisingly fine and tight; the piece is supple and lightweight.
In a state of preservation bordering on the miraculous.

Like most antique textiles from the 19th century or earlier, the piece consists of two panels joined and sewn together. Looms of that era had to be lightweight and easily transportable.
There is, of course, a slight asymmetry. The goal was certainly not to create a perfect piece. The focus was on aesthetics, durability, and refinement...
This kilim is truly a museum-quality piece; it could just as easily be exhibited in a New York gallery or featured in a specialized book on antique Caucasian textiles.
